#FridayReads

#fridayreads take me away is a meme started by Jenn aka Picky Girl. Celebrate the start of the weekend.

Share what you're reading.

Don't apologize for your choices. Revel in the them.

Why I'm reading this:

I initally bailed on the blog tour for this title; I looked at the cover and didn't give it another thought. Then I came across a review for it and was ticked off at myself for not finding out what the book was about.

Ready?

Sally and Clive have been having a tempestuous, passionate affair. They email eachother incessantly, they "catalogue the minutiae" of their lives and get each other through the mundanity of their days.

And then one day Clive ends it all.

Encouraged by her therapist to write through the emotional turmoil, Sally keeps a journal.

Read Sally's thoughts, justifications, and rationalizations for what she does next.

Wow! This novel is a cliffhanger, no doubt. But Sally's voice is compelling, and so real it almost seems like you're talking to your slightly unhinged best friend (no, Jenn F. not referring to you). Like she's all there, and you get her, but she's just gone a bit mad, which is understandable considering how in love she was with the guy.

The writing is awesome.

This is Sally's journal entry (she addresses them all to Clive):

Sometimes, you know, I regret being so indiscreet about my disintegrating relationship. I should have taken a leaf out of your book. Even when you and Sally were at your most unraveled, you still gave off the impression of the ideal Sunday supplement couple, with your legendary Sunday lunches, your family picnics at Kenwood, your weekend-long house parties in the country. Me, I turned marital discord into a spectator sport. I practically sold tickets. Available now, a ringside seat to watch two people dissect their relationship piece by microscopic piece.

I'm turning off my computer. Ignoring the housework. Snuggling into the couch and finishing this one up by  the end of today.

This evening, I will be posting a review for David Abbott's The Upright Piano Man, and for Helen Walsh's Go To Sleep.

Come on by tomorrow morning, when the Literary Giveaway Blog Hop begins. More than 70 participants and a hell of a lotta books.

Stay tuned.
